What is Scaling and Root Planing?

Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning treatment that helps stop gum disease from getting worse. It goes beyond a regular dental cleaning by carefully cleaning under the gumline, where harmful bacteria and buildup hide.

  • Scaling: This step removes plaque and hardened tartar (calculus) from the surfaces of your teeth, especially below the gums where regular brushing and flossing can’t reach.

  • Root Planing: After scaling, the root surfaces of your teeth are smoothed out. This makes it harder for bacteria to stick and helps your gums heal and reattach more firmly to your teeth.

Why Might You Need It?

When plaque and tartar stay under the gums, they can cause gum inflammation, bleeding, and bone loss around your teeth. Left untreated, this condition—called periodontal (gum) disease—can lead to loose teeth or even tooth loss.

Scaling and root planing is often recommended when early signs of gum disease are found, such as:

  • Gums that bleed easily when brushing or flossing

  • Persistent bad breath

  • Red, swollen, or tender gums

  • Gum recession (gums pulling away from teeth)

What to Expect

This treatment is usually done with local numbing to keep you comfortable. Depending on how much cleaning is needed, it may take more than one visit. Afterward, your gums may feel a little sore, but they will begin to heal and tighten around your teeth.

With good home care and regular dental checkups, scaling and root planing can help restore gum health, prevent further damage, and protect your natural teeth for years to come.
