Understanding Dental Radiographs (X-Rays)

$150+

Dental radiographs, commonly called X-rays, are an important diagnostic tool that allow dental professionals to see areas of the teeth and jaw that cannot be seen during a regular exam. They help detect problems early, often before you feel pain or notice any changes.

Why Dental X-Rays Are Important

  • Detect cavities between teeth or under fillings.

  • Identify gum disease and bone loss.

  • Reveal infections, cysts, or abscesses.

  • Monitor tooth development in children.

  • Assist in treatment planning for implants, dentures, braces, and other procedures.

Types of Dental Radiographs

  1. Bitewing X-Rays

    • Show upper and lower teeth in one area.

    • Help detect cavities between teeth and monitor bone levels.

    • Typically taken once a year during routine checkups.

  2. Periapical X-Rays

    • Show the entire tooth from crown to root.

    • Used to check root health, bone structure, abscesses, and other root-related issues.

  3. Panoramic X-Rays

    • Capture the entire mouth in a single image, including teeth, jaws, sinuses, and joints.

    • Useful for evaluating wisdom teeth, jaw disorders, bone abnormalities, and orthodontic needs.

  4. Occlusal X-Rays

    • Show a broad view of either the upper or lower jaw.

    • Often used to track tooth development in children or locate extra teeth.

  5. Cone Beam CT (3D Imaging)

    • Provides detailed 3D images of teeth, bone, nerves, and soft tissues.

    • Typically used for advanced procedures such as implants, surgical planning, or complex cases.

How Safe Are Dental X-Rays?

  • Dental X-rays use very low levels of radiation — much lower than medical imaging.

  • Protective measures, such as lead aprons and thyroid collars, are always used to minimize exposure.

  • Modern digital X-rays reduce radiation even further compared to traditional film.

  • For perspective: a set of bitewing X-rays exposes you to less radiation than a short airplane flight.

When and How Often Are They Taken?

The frequency of dental X-rays depends on your age, oral health, and risk factors:

  • Adults with healthy mouths: Typically every 1–2 years.

  • Patients with gum disease, history of decay, or ongoing treatment: May need them more frequently.

Dental radiographs are a safe and essential tool for detecting issues early and creating a personalized treatment plan for your best oral health.

Fluoride Varnish: Extra Protection for Your Smile

$50

Fluoride varnish is a quick, gentle coating brushed onto the teeth to help strengthen enamel and protect against cavities. Unlike the fluoride in toothpaste or mouthwash, varnish stays on the teeth for several hours, giving them time to absorb extra minerals and become more resistant to decay.

Fluoride varnish is especially helpful for older adults and patients with special needs because:

  • Fights Root Cavities: As gums naturally recede with age or due to certain conditions, the roots of teeth become exposed and more vulnerable to decay.

  • Strengthens Weakened Enamel: Medications, dry mouth, and certain health conditions can make enamel more prone to breakdown—fluoride varnish helps protect it.

  • Easy and Comfortable: The varnish is quickly painted on with a small brush—no trays or rinsing needed—making it ideal for patients who may have difficulty sitting through longer treatments.

  • Gentle for Sensitive Teeth: Helps reduce tooth sensitivity often experienced by older patients or those with gum recession.
